BOROUGH COUNCIL
FORTNIGHTLY MEETINGi .The fortnightly meeting of the Gisborne Borough Council was held lest evening. Present: The Mayor, Mr D. W. Cblonian, M.P., and Ci’s, G. Bradley Smith, H. E.' Maude, H. .Holnms, J.‘ AVebb, J. Hall, N. H. Bull, H. H. ‘l)iGoista,' Dl S. Thompson and P. Busliriell.
Mr-G. Crawshaw, managing secretary, East Coast Airway, Ltd., wrote asking' that steps' be taken to have the water supply extended to the hangar at the aerodrome. —The. application was referred to the waterworks committee.
Mayqf' Blackburn, president of the Gisborne G'a.rrison ■ Officers’ Institute, wrote (inviting the Mayor and councillors to attend lectures on “Tank Manoeuvres. »1935’j’ and “International Affairs” to’" be given in the Ab-erc-om Hall on duly 2 arid August 23. It was' decided to ’ accept the invitation and stating that the May r or arid as' many councillors as possible would attend.
Messrs Chrisp arid Chrisp wrote ask ing for the council’s consent to grant use of a right of way in' Derby street adjacent to the' Poverty Bay garage. —The application was granted. Mr F’rank Parker sought permission to sub-divide a large dwellinghouse in Palmerston, road by a' partition of plaster board.—lt was decided to refer the matter to the works com raittee.
A deputation from the Borough Council waited bn the Cook County Council at its last meeting, asking if that body would contribute to the cost of ap open drain in* Valley road, Mdngapapa, which! it. was considered would alleviate the position in regard to flooding in that area. A reply was received by the Borough. Council slat ing that the Cook County Council was not prepared to alter its previous decision in the matter. —The letter was received.
A requisition signed by 106 residents requested the council to allow the bus to run thrice daily to' the outer Kaiti area, via Owen and Tyndall roads, also two nights weekly after the pictures.—The matter was referred to the bus manager. The Festival of Sport -wrote making an application for a packet day sell'ng sixpenny and shilling packets from ears and lorries on the streets, possibly on July 10, though the date had not definitely been fixed.— The application was granted.
The Reserves 'Committee recommended that the engineer be authorised to obtain quotations for 3000 pinus insigni trees to replace, dead trees in the various borough plantations.—The report was adopted. SEPTIC TANK WANTED IN RU LAVER ROAD Mr F. Toler ton wrote further in regard to- a recent application for sewerage in Bulwer road, applying for permission to construct of septic tank. “In view of the amount paid in rates without return”, -stated; the letter, “I presume your council will favorably consider a contribution to the cost.”
The Ma.ror said applications had been made, previously for septic tanks in the district, and had been refused, and the council certainly could not see its way to contribute on this occasion. Cr. DeCosta suggested that if the medical officer approved the application should be granted. The Mayor said , that naturally the medical officer would approve hut the question of a. sewerage area, in the future had to be considered. On the Mayor’s motion it was decided to refer the matter to the sanitary committee. MILK FOR SCHOOL CHILDREN A letter was received from Mrs McUroy, lion, secretary to the women’s branch of the Unemployed Workers’ Movement appealing for a donation for the purpose of helping the school committees to supply children with hot milk and cocoa during the winter months. The Mayor §aid Miss Jamieson, of the Health Office, had seen him on the subject. She had started the fund and had handed it over to. the Priinamy Schools Association, who were providing children with milk for a few months. He thought the Primary Schools Association would -be in a better position to deal with the work than any outside organisation.
On the Mayor’s motion, seconded bv Cr. DeCosta, it was decided to donate two guineas to the Primary Schools Association. PUBLIC WORKS. The report of the public works com mitlee included the following items: It is recommend.xl that directional lines lor pedestrians be placed hi Gladstone road at the intersection el Peel street in order to train pedestrians to cross the road at right angles at this intersection, instead ol the dangerous practice indulged in by numbers of people walking diagonally across the road. In connection' with the footway in Gladstone road* between 'Bright jind Peel streets, it was recommended that in order to remove the inconvrnienco caused' pedestrians by pools ol wafer lying oil this path in wet weather, tlio engineer life authorised to relieve the position wherever practic able by' filling the depressions.' The reconstruction of Gladstone road footways is a matter which will require tho council’s consideration in the near future. ■ Tho report was adopted. ,
