WORLD’S RAREST

INTERESTING PLANT FROM CHATHAMS Found only at Chatham Islands, and considpred to he probably the rarest plant, in the world, a specimen or the aciphvlla or Spaniard family has been acquired by Mr L. D. Haggptt. Lower Hntt. It possesses the Mwr.idable name- Coxclla differbaclm, and was formerly quite plentiful until almost completely eaten out by stock. To-day it is only found on cliffs and -other places inaccessible to sheep. The plant was; named by man , the New Zealand botanist, in honor of Mr F. A. D. Ccx, a resident of Chatham Islands for many years. The. extra name dieffenbachii is to commemorate the German botanist Ernest Dieffenfc&ch, who was. in New Zealand from 1539 to 1841. A specimen of the plant is growing in Christchurch, where it has flowered. It is 18 inches h gh, with dark green leaves, tough and leathery. -Some of the plants are male and some female. The sex of the .specimen in Mr Haggetfs possession has not yet been determined. He intends to place it in the Otnni museum.
