NOTES AND NEWS

Possessing more speed than the average hurdler, Clarion Call gyve a demonstration ol his worth when he won the Remuera Hurdles on the second Day at Ellerslie in flic Now Zealand record time of 3.36 4/5 for two rfiiles over hurdles. Besides being brilliant, ho is a good slayer and quick fencer, and in view of the fact that ho is only a. five-year-okl his prospects appear very bright. For a horse who has not been racing a great length of time, Clarion CalLhas done very well and has proved ifidsi versatile, having won over hurdles and country and on the fiat also. It would appear likely that ho is to be given another opportunity on tho flat, as ho has been nominated for the principal handicaps at Wanganui

Although ho fell in the Great Northern Hurdles, Jolly Beggar proved himself a first-class hurdler by winning the Campbell Hurdles on Saturday with 11.3. .It was a good performance and once again he demonstrated that ho is a very fine stayer. Jolly Beggar is a resolute galloper and even though lie is well up in the weights he may gain more successes during tho winter. His staying ability will always be a factor in his favor in the long-distance races.

At the Ascot (N.S.W.) • races' yesterday Headmaster was unplaced iu the Flying Welter Haudiean.—P.A.

Consistency was a feature of the form of The Smuggler at, the Great Northern meeting, when he ran three good seconds, and more than paid expenses by capturing £370 in stakes. Although ho is in his tenth year, The Smuggler retains plenty of pace and dash and.is a clever fencer, who should soon get another winning turn.

One of the most promising horses seen out in the hunters’ races at Ellerslie was Tangled, who ran second in tho Hurdles and at his next attempt gave a splendid exhibition .of-fencing to win the Hunt Club Gup. A fire-year-old gelding by Dead S'ea from Dainty Step, Tangled is a robust type and appears io be the makings of a fine steeplechaser. As he is under the care of L. Knapp at Awapuni, a successful trainer of jumpers, he is in tho right hands to receive every opportunity to make good.

If ever a horse deserved to win a good race it was Forest Glow and his victory in the Winter Steeplechase at Ellerslie on Saturday was a fitting reward for his consistency. The win was gained by a very good finishing run and won going away at the end after being a long way hack running up tho hill the second time, when it appeared likely that Thespis would win. Although ho may not he as dashing a jumper as some of the other steeplechasers, Forest Glow is a, very lino reliable fencer, with solid staying ability, and seems to be doing better with every race.

• 4- * One of the most improved horses at the A.R.C. winter meeting was Dark Shadow, who improved with each race, and won twico after running a. good fourtTi on the first day. Dark Shadow’s wins wore achieved in easy fashion and promotion from hack to open company should not prevent him from winning more races. Up to a mile there is no doubt that he is very smart and ho should prove very profitable during the next few months if it is decided to race him during tho winter.

L. G. Morris, who returned home from Ellerslie with Clarion Call after tho second day’s racing, was at Otaki on Saturday. An Auckland report stated that Clarion Call was likely to go to Melbourne, but Morris, says this is incorrect. There is no such intention. Clarion Call will race next at Wanganui, where he has been entered for flat events.

* * « Tho manner in which Allegretto won tho two back steeplechases at Ellerslio was very impressive, more especially as he accomplished the victory on a comparatively short preparation. With three successive wins to his credit, Allegretto has placed himself well in the limelight and he is a fine slaver and jumper whoso prospects should bo very rosy if he keeps sound. All going well, he should he a distinct possibility for races like the Wellington Steeplechase and tho Grand National Steeplechase.
