On Friday afternoon the office of tho Poverty Bay Bacon Company was the scene of a pleasing little ceremony when Aliss Nui Lunn, the popular secretary, was farewelled by tho members of the staff prior to leaving on u visit to England.

The manager, Air L. AYoodbury, in a happy manner, referred to Aliss Luim’s long association with the company and, on behalf of her colleagues, asked her to accept a handsome leather bag as a tangible tribute of their esteem.

AN INFORMAL PARTY

Games, competitions .and dancing were enjoyed at the delightful in.ovum! party, organiser! by the Misses B. Parker and S. Wallis, on Saturday night a the home of Mrs. F. Tolerton, Bulwer road, for the benetit of the hostess’ small daughter, Jeanne, a candidate in the Plunket baby photographic competition. The rooms were artistically decorated with autumn blooms, and. a delicious super was served from a flower decked table in the dining-room. Mrs. Tolerton c was wearing a becoming frock of rose pink patterned geongette, cut on simple linos. Miss Parker was smart in black lace, and Miss Wallis’ pretty lrock oi Marina blue crepe was trimmed with silver.'

A BRILLIANT FUNCTION,

Ono of the chief social events of tho season Avas the coming-out ball given by 3lr and Alrs-H. B. Williams, of Turihaua station, at the City Hall on Friday night to celebrate tho debut of their only daughter, Jan.

Tho host aud hostess received in tho floAvor-decked lounge, the many guests, including a large number from Hawke’s Bay, then passing on to offer their felicitations to 31iss Williams.

"Airs Williams was extremely smart ir. a frock of sea-green lame shot Avitli gold, designed Avith a draped bodice in (ho backless mode and a slenderly-cut skirt sAveeping into a graceful train. A cape of green ostrich feathers completed her toilette. >/ , - 31iss Williams wore a French frock of off Avhite glass lace, exquisite in its simple elegance. A yoke of matching tulle ornamented with frosted floAver petals, formed cape sleeves, and float fug draperies of tulle, outlined beloAv the hips with frosted flowers, fell to the hem of the skirt, Avhich just revealed silver sandals. A coronet of frosted leaves was Avon and her ornaments Avere a ])earl necklace and earrings to match. A sheaf of carnations in delicate tonings enhanced the ethereal loveliness of the ensemble.

The City Hail was completely transformed for the function, tho distinctive decorations creating an atmosphere of charm. The vestibule was hanked Avith green hydrangeas and a canopy of streamers and hunting adorned the ballroom, gold filigree shades diffusing a soft radiance upon the dancers.

Picturesque alcoves, latticed In rose, pink and massed Avith ' feathery greenery, Avere arranged for sitting-out. The stage also wab emboAvered in greenery and a Avealth of orange-shad-ed Iceland poppies and bronze chrysanthemums, baskets of trailing ferns, suspended overhead adding to the artistic effect.

The decorative note was repeated in the lounge, Avhere bridge Avas enjoyed bv the non-dancers.

Tire gay and up-to-date music, directed by Air G. Chrisp. was supplied by a baud comprising eight instrumentalists, the introduction of an electric amplifier and a vocalist singing to the accompaniment of the band being an innovation to Gisborne. Refreshments Avere dispensed during the evening at a buffet adjoining tho ballroom, and a delectable supper was seiwcd upstairs at small tables—each adorned with a green linen cloth bordered with deep orange and a centre bowl of French marigolds intermin-. gled Avitli Avondorfully blended foliage.
