Tho Sup, rente Court, by a six to three majority, declared Llie Guffey coal law unconstitutional.
Mr. .justice Sutherland, , speaking .for tho majority, held that the Federal Government had no power to regulate hours and wages in tho mining industry and . gave llie N.R.A, reversal as a precedent. The Court of Appeals of the District of Columbia fas decided that tlie 1935 Relief Act, whereby tho Government - undertook to redistribute, groups of population from uneconomic!.areas to new districts and establish them there is violative of the State’s powers.

Bituminous mine operators expressed satisfaction at the setback to the Government's effort to regiinentise the coal industry. Organised Labor., on the other hand, considered tlie decision discouraging and expressed the opinion that a sharper struggle .in . the economic field -was the only recourse left in order to win its demands Tor recognition of , collective., bargaining. - -
