NORTHERN COASTAL ITEMS. WAIAPU COUNTY COUNCIL. (Special to tho Times.) To the monthly meeting of the Waiapu County Council, the organiser of the Mayor of Auckland’s Fund for Crippled Children wrote stating that lie was endeavoring to raise a portion of the £15,000 required to enable the property offered by Mr and Airs R. W.. Wilson (at Takapuna) to be equipped.—Cr. H. Williams stated that, as far as East. Coast crippled children were concerned, they could all he treated locally. The only difficulty was transport.-—lt was decided that the clerk make out subscription lists to he sent throughout the county to raise funds to assist, the New Zealand Society.—The chairman .stated that local Coast crippled children would benefit through the society.

Mr John Walker wrote as to the position of the metalling of his road near Ruatoria.—lt was resolved to reply that, although the council had applied for' a grant, it had not been made available.—An application for a grant'will be renewed.

Air Ben MeClutchie wrote asking what could he done to metal the Maliora road now that it is completed.— It was decided that nothing could he done before March 31.

The District Engineer inquired whether the council required to have the old road at tho junction of the Waiapu Inland and Tokomaru-Muta roads closed.—Road not needed.

The Premier, as Native Minister, wrote in reference to the council’s representations in regard to payment of rates out. of pooling schemes, stating that the position will be looked into. He also wrote that the question of the collection of Native rates will ho given attention.—When the letters were read Cr. O. T. Williams drew a laugh by saying: “1 had rather hoped that tho replies from the new Government would he couched in different terms.” Messrs. Nolan and Sheet wrote that they had received a letter from the Registrar of the Maori Land Court staling that steps are now being taken to place on the market all blocks for which receivership orders have been made. This refers to the enforcing of rate-charging orders.Cr. D. Williams stated that there were about a dozen such properties. —The letter was received. This js just one more step in the Gilberlian procedure through which the council is compelled to wade in an effort to collect, unpaid Native rates.

EAST COAST HEALTH. HOSPITAL STATISTICS. DISTRICT NURSING. Dr. N. R. Maekay reported to the Waiapu Hospital Board that, during December. 40 patients were admitted to Te Puia Hospital. Thirty were discharged and three died. Twenty remained at the end of the year. Nine operations were performed. Sister Johnson reported that seven patients were admitted to the Tokomnru Bay maternity home; four were discharged and six remained in the home on the. last day of December.

Nurse 1. Banks (Tikitiki) reported that during December 56 treatments had been given to 44 Natives. There had been seven maternity cases. The general health of the infants was satisfactory. There had been 14 attendances on ten infants. Eleven schools and pas had been visited, four with a doctor. Two new and two old cases of tuberculosis. two other diseases, 49 other complaints and one accident received attention. School inoculations had been given for typhoid. Fees collected totalled £3/7/-.

Nurse Alangakahia reported .16 individuals treated once each, and two maternity eases. One case of tuberculosis, six other respiratory diseases, and five other complaints received attentiou. Fees collected totalled £l/10/-.

KAWA KAWA GARDENING CIRCLE.

Members of the circle met at tho residence of Airs Halliweil, who was hostess. Airs Hughes presided. An interesting talk was given by Mrs Hughes on “Hydrangea Growing and Border Carnation Culture.” A cornpetition, remembering most names of flowers in the garden, was won by Airs Hughes.
