The opening ceremony at the Adelaide ! oval of, the 1936 national games was a remarkable arid moving scene. In a picturesque parade, live hundjred athletes marched post before the crowd of ten thousand. After the National Ahtliem two ' minutes’ -silence wa§ observed in memory of King George. The crowd stood rind cheered as twenty-two torch relay runners finished, their long trek from Melbourne, after covering 480 miles in fifty-two hours. The Games flame was then ignited by the torch from Melbourne. While the Olympic flag was being unfurled a hymn was sting and thousands of pigeons, emblematical of the dove of peace, were released. Carter (Victoria) 2, Miss J. Edwards (South Australia) 5. limo 12 l-ssec. Miss Clarice Kennedy completed! a magnificent treble when she also won the javelin throw, with 114 ft. O^in. Men’s 400 metres.—H, Yate s (Victoria) 1, T. Irwin (Victoria) 2, B. Bonfield (Queensland) 3. Time 495-ec. 4500' metres,—G, Backhouse (A'im toria) 1, L. Brady (South Australia) 2, AV.
