HOLMES BEATS RIDDELL.

That experienced campaigner, J. W. H. Holmes, .piloted his rink to victory of the Peace Shield-.fourna-mont played yesterday under the auspices of the East Coast Bowling Centre. In final, Holmes was.ppposed by another Gisborne Club rink, that skipped,by W. Riddell,, and he eventually won by 20——19. Through" out the tournament a. very high stan(lard, of play was. piaintaiiied .and all arrangements .proceeded with the greatest smoothness. Section play was decided on Thursday, but yesterday a tie in Section ,> C required, a deciding match, Holmes •- beating MacGibon (Poverty Bay) bv 28—16 in this clash. , The semi-finals were played later, the results being as follows:

Head 15: In a long head York drew a toucher which remained until Balfour wicket:' the shot ball,, though he failed to lie shot. Head 17: Gandell’s first was near the kitty, but Balfour trailed the kitty. Beckett was short and Maude drew a good one. Beckett’s drive took two out, but Holmes drew the; shot with a toucher. —Holmes 26,' Riddell 17.

Head 18: Short bowls were played until Balfour rubbed through- to lie shot. Beckett drove tho kitty into the ditch just outside the line. On the re-play York drew two and Gandell one,,but Maude drew to beat all but the shot bowl.—Holmes 26, Riddell 18.

Head 19: After York had played a good one, Balfour drew the shot. Gandell . ran .the shot bowl , off and Beckett drew, to lie 3 up,. Maude play ed into the head to secure second shot and Beckett missed with a drive. Maude played a good back bowl. There was ijo later alteration.— Holmes 26, Riddell ,19. Head 20: Quigley scored one against York arid the No. 2’s, went right;through the head. While Beckett tried, for a*, Rkill,” • Holmes built up the head. TROPHIES PRESENTED. Later the, president of the centre, Mr. Myles Doyle, presented, the Peace Shield to the winning skip, J. "VV. H. Holmes, and warmly congratulated tho rink on its success, also the runners-up on their good fight. Mr. Holmes suitably replied and especially eulogised tho play of Mr. Quigley, commenting that, for a new chum, his performance was outstanding.

Mr. T. Corson also presented the handsome Yelverton Shield, competed for in the pennant games, Mr. Jackson receiving this on behalf of the Kahutia Club and suitably responding- . .. .
