Despite efforts on the part of the .police to revupen the case, Mr Justice Trcnclrayd, at Trenton. New Jercov. to-day announced tlic bupieme Court's refusal to review the conviction of Hauptmann, who had been found guilty of the murder of Colonel and Mrs Lindbergh s baby, and sentenced to die in the electric chair on January 14.
The defence indicated that- it would attempt to prevent the execution through one of three, possible, devices: (1) It may undertake to present new evidence to Mr Justice Trenchard' and . ask for a > postponement of the execution; (2fi it may pro sent before the. Federal Court a technical question of law (3) it may petition the Now Jersey Court cf 1 argons for commutation of the death penalty, to life imprisonment. . Meanwhile, to further, complicate the case Abe Governor, Mr Hoffman, issued a formal statement to the effect. that fie shared with hundreds of thousands of others doubt .if Hauptmann’s conviction was the final solution of tho murder of the baby,-, and indicated that be would like further investigation before Hauptnian v ditto. the electric chair.
Mr Condon dropped a bombshell into the whole complicated . affair today when he said ha had been offered bribes exceeding £50,0C0 to exert efforts to have the sentence reduced to life imprisonment,': but .had refused: all because lie, was, convinced that Hauptmann is .guilty. lie .declined to name (he persons who; attempted to influence, him.- ~ ~, i,.i >■., '
