A big scheme of railway development works, extending over five years and costing some £30,000,000, and’ for which a loan is to be guaranteed as to principal and interest by the Exchequer will be raised, has been agreod upon following prolonged negotiations between the Government and four main lino railway companies. The granting of the necessary powers by Parliament is only awaited before this programme of expansion and reconstruction is put in hand. In addition to the reconstruction and enlarging of many important stations and goods yards, the building of rolling stock and the laying of now branch and loop lines are proposed. The works include the extension of the automatic train control system, the installation of colored light signalling and other safety precautions, and big schemes of electrification. When completed the electrical services from London, which already run to® Brighton and Eastbourne, will exUfeid to Portsmouth, , Arnndol and hustings.
