BAY OF PLENTY SEAT. & AIR J. T. MERRY'S CAMPAIGN. . In pursuance of his campaign for the Bay 'of -Plenty seat, the Nationalist 'candidate, Air j.' T. Metry, addressed • a mooting in tlio Tmlroto s'choolhouse on Wednesday’ evening, Air J. Berry presiding over a fair at- - tendance. 'Che candidate spok,e on the lines previously reported. At question time some amu,semenfc wa's caused when tlie ‘candidate was asked if, seeing lie had spoken ■so much about the farmer and production, there was anyone else on the roll but the farmer. The candidate joined in the hearty laughter. On the motion of Air T. Hall, the candidate was accorded a vote of thanks. ; Yesterday afternoon Air Merry spoke in the Tahunga schoolroom when, despite the rain, there was a fair attendance. Air, G. IJ. Alorice presided. i At the conclusion of his address, Mr E. H. Baker, in moving a vote of thanks, said that what was valued was a -sound and stable Govemnent, and not currency’ quacks, and it was up to them to elect Air Alerry. The motion was carried with acclamation. The Te Ivaraku picture hall was fairly well filled last evening to listen to Air Aleriy’-s advocacy of the Governniciit progfamiiVe. During question time the candidate was asked his views on tho. completion of the Gisborne railway’.—Air Merry’ said he fully supported the project, but would prefer to see tlie work done b,v the Government rather than by private enterprise. In reply to another question, the candidate said he approved of the amalgamation .of local bodies,, .which would prove to be an economy’ that could well be effected. A vote of thanks to the candidate, proposed by Air F. Hobbs and seconded 'by Mi’ L. Rutledge, was carried unanimously. This evening Air Alerry will speak at Kaiteratalii. AUCKLAND EAST. AIR J. B. DONALD DEMOCRAT CANDIDATE. (Press Association. > AUCKLAND, Nov. 7. Air J. B. Donald, chairman of the Auckland executive of the Democrat Party and former Postmaster-Gen-eral and Alinister of Customs and Alarine in the United Cabinet, announced himself to-day as the party’s candidate for Auckland East seat, which he held froin 1928 to 1931. when, he retired. The candidate held bis first meeting to-night, when he dealt with the main features of the Democrat policy and was well received by a small attendance. DUNEDIN SOUTH SEAT COMMUNIST CANDIDATE. IS UNION OFFICIAL. RESIGNS SECRETARYSHIP. UNDER PRESSURE. (Press Association.) DUNEDIN, Nov. 7. Because lie is standing as a Communist candidate for Dunedin South, m -opposition to the official Labor candidate, Air F. Jones, ALP., Air. Samuel Ikins,’ resignation as secretary of the Carpenters’ Union has been demanded. He declined tlio alternative to retire from the contest, and- is resign* fug as secretary’. He stated thlili on principle, this was his only course, as the union was composed of all shades of political opinion, and was not political in nature. Although the union has 496 members, only 37 attended a special meeting, and- the motion demanding his retirement or resignation was carried by a majority of six votes.
