DAVIS CUP MATCH. AUSTRALIA ELIMINATES FRANCE. CRAWFORD’S THRILLING DEFEAT OF BOITSSUS. MERLIN TOO GOOD FOR MoGRATH. (U.P A. by Elec. Tel. G-vjvrighO PARIS, June 10 Australia defeated France’ in the Davis Cup series. Crawford defeated Houssus, 2—G, 6 4, 6—4, 4—6, 9—7; Merlin defeated McGrath, 6—4, A—7, 6—3, 6—4. Australia will now meet Germany. Bonuses began in an inspired fashion, and hit audacious winners, sharply angled, Ifrom both forehand and backhand. He soon led .5 —1, and returning Crawford’s best shots, took the set. The crowd was greatly excited. Crawford was down 2 —4 in the second set, and then won four games in a row to take the .set. In the third set, Crawford, playing with normal consistency, went to a 5—3 lead and, advancing to the net, forced his opponent- into errors. Boussus, in the fourth .set, played with the same brilliance as in the first, making placements to all parts of the court. The Australian led 3—o, 4—l, and 5 —3 in the final set, but Boussus, a ttacking Crawford"’s hack hand and advancing to the net for angled volley winners, evened at A—o, with the spectators cheering madly. Crawford captured his opponent’s service for a- 6—5 lead hut Bous sus retaliated, taking Crawford’s service. Crawford concentrated on keeping the ball in play and waiting for Boussus to make mistakes. Crawford had three match points before lie finally won, after a. most exciting rally. The match lasted 2} hours. With the tie won, the Merlin-Mc-Grath match was more in the nature of an exhibition. McGrath had insufficient- pace "to maintain the attack, and his form was poor.
