CRICKET

SOUTH AFRICA v. NORTHANTS COUNTY'S SENSATIONAL START THREE MEN DISMISSED WITHOUT SCORING ALL OUT FOR 129 TOURISTS LOSE FIVE FOR 114 CU.P.A. Dy Elec. ief. o^yright.) LONDON, June g. Playing on a difficult wicket neither Northants, nor the South African batsmen was able to make much of a showing in the cricket match which commenced to-day. Batting first, the county were all out for 129. There was an almost sensational start. The South African bowlers taking the first wicket with the first ball, and then three more wickets in half an hour for IF runs. Three of the batsmen were dismissed without scoring. Cuthbertson, coming in after the fifth wicket, changed the complexion. of the game somewhat, defying tho efforts of the six African bowlers. He lost four partners in quick succession, however, and it was not until Clark, who was least expected to make a stand, came in second to last wicket that the bowling was at all subdued. Clark contributed a useful 26, and Cuthbertson carried his bat for an extremely useful 63, the highest score on either side. No fewer than six' of the Northants’ side failed to score.

The former New Zealand wicket keeper, Ken James, played for tihe first time for Ntorthants,. and gave an impressive performance, only four extras being scored. Ihe South Africans, when their turn came, were not a great deal better than the county men, five wickets being down for 114 when stumps were drawn early owing to the bad light, Siedle, lie opened, being still at the wickets with 55 - to his credit.
