At a meeting of tho provincial executive of the Southland Farmers’ Union, Mr E. K.. Sim, chairman of the Meat and Wool Committee, said that - the committee viewed with grave apprehension the inability of the British Government tq stamp out foot and mouth disease and the committee recommended that until all danger of infection was proved to be elminated, the raising of the embargo be opposed. Members considered that the recommendation was not strong enough, and .that the executive .should say straight out that it strongly opposed tho lifting of the embargo. The recommendation was varied accordingly and carried.—P.A. Nominations for seats on the Invercargill City Council closed yesterday. The Mayor (Mr John Miller was returned unopposed. There are 24 candidates for 12 seats on the council.—P.A.
