BRENNAN CTJP FINAL. PALMERSTON BEATS GISBORNE. The following description of the Brennan Cup final, in which Palmerston North beat Gisborne Marist by 7—o on the concluding day of the Marist tournament at Napier is from the “H.B. Herald” : “Play started off with a tedious amount of kicking, which repeatedly failed to find the line. Both sides found it extremely hard to handle the greasy ball with accuracy, and play settled down to scrambling among the forwards. Gisborne came dangerously near to scoring, but were brought back to, a five-yards scrum, i and Palmerston cleared. Gisborne came near to scoring again when their forwards swept down the field, profiting by misfielding among the Palmerston North backs. A misdirected field goal spoilt what appeared. to be an excellent opportunity for a try. Palmerston again cleared, rushed the Gisborne backs and forced them into errors. A smothered clearing kick was gathered by C. E* lin, and he dropped a splendid field goal. Palmerston 4, Gisborne nil. The first half, which throughout was mainly in the same strain,' ended without further score. Palmerston opened the second half by compelling two successive foi ce-downs. From the second dropout a melee developed, from which Palmerston were awarded a. penalty on the twenty-five. Edlin goaled. Palmerston 7, Gisborne nil. After Palmerston had spent most, of the spell on attack, they were awarded another penalty on the Gisborne 26. This time Edlin’s kick fell short. Play ended in midfield with Palmerston definitely holding the upper hand.” OPENING OF LOCAL SEASON refebe.es FOR, TO-MO RROW Referees ' allotted for the first championship matches of the season, to be played to-morrow, under the auspices of the Poverty Bay Rugby Union, are as under: — Seniors: Celtic v.
