According to speakers, similar gatherings will be hoi cl throughout the nat'on until an organisation is effected along the linos of a regular political party, although Father Coughlin insists that his only aim is to “lobby” for his sixteen-point legislative campaign and that he has no aspirations t-o assume political leadership himself. To-night, 17,000 League members crowded Olympia .stadium. Thousands more outside heard the speeches through amplifiers. Representatives of the National Fanners’ Union and the American Federation o'f Labor participated in the programme,. a.s did a number of Congressmen, including Seiiiator Nyc. Mr Thomas, the chairman, made the startling claim That '8,500,000 voters iiad signed petitions supporting the sixteen point programme, the principal feature of which is the abolition of tlie Federal Renerve ■system, substituting a governmentally controlled Central Bank, Tlie presence of several prominent New York cotton brokers is regarded as a significant indication that opponents of the Administration’s crop curtaiment policy may gather under Father Coughlin’s banner in a determined attack cn the A.A.A.
