Copyright.) ROME, April '22. Hoprnan, he Sun-Herald News Service correspondent-, says Menzel created a sensation by walking off the centre court when leading comfortably in his match to-day, refusing to return. Palmieri returned an apparently certain winner from Menzel, who missed a volley and gesticulated to heaven. A section of the gallery began whistling, but ceased when Menzel spoke to the umpire, who appealed for silence. Menzel waited at the umpire’s chair for complete silence. Laughing broke out, an.d Menzel then marched off without saying a word to the- umpire. Palmieri ,who had been a passive spectator, collected his racquets and left the conrt. Borotra and officials attempted to persuade Menzel to return, hut after 20 minutes the umpire announced that Menzel had retired adding that Menzel said he -Had nothing against- the public and would have liked to return, but as he had luul a rest he thought it would bo fairer to his opponent to -scratch. Crawford and McGrath had to put up a long and tense struggle to roach the semi-finals. They were a long way from their true form, with the result that Boussus and Dos Treneau once looked like snatching victory -over a. normally far superior pair, as they led the Australians s—l in the fourth -set.
