BOWLS

BURTON CUP TROPHY SECTION PLAY COMPLETED Sectional play in the Bwton tournament was finalised yester y Mndor somewhat unpleasant tfons. the rain, however, not being sufficiently heavy to interfere wi .the' progress of ..the games or nltect the enthusiasm of the large num ber of competitors. . D sectiion 'produced a, -surprise, when the rink skipped by F. »n---liams, which had a wonderful opportunity of qualifying .for post sectional play, was defeated by Crawford (Poverty Bay). The latter skip, with lii.3 team, played a particulnily hard game, which was rather unfortunate' for Williams, who was not showing quite such brilliant form as on the ’opening days. Dudfiold (Kahutia) arid Lowe .(Tokomaru), were 'Outstanding in this section, and enter the oemi-fmals with one loss each. In A section, G. Bennett would appear to he a bowkrig “star.” This skip seems to take' all opponents in his stride, and' was never really' in trouble, winning all nine games com f’ortably. Whiting, of Poverty Bay, did remarkably well to. he orilv two points'behind at the end. Holmes, in B section,' also refused to'be'beaten. A game remains unnished between this r-kip and Smith, He was, however, a* few points ahead, so that he also may have achieved the honor of succeeding in all nine games." His • finishing effort with Roderick was edifying, and the most stubbornly fought head ,‘in the tournament. Requiring three to win, “Skipper’'’ persisted' in 'burning the . head until he achieved his object. Holmes is going to make things interesting in the finals. / ; - Stephenson and Branch were the leading lights in C section. The former has lost only one game, and curiously enough that' defeat was by a teafn with only three wins. This rink will also be a hard nut to crack in the final stages. Last evening the draw .for postsectional play was made as follows: Morse v. nolmes. Bennett v. Lowe. Smith v. Branch Dudfield v. Stephenson. —Semi-finalr— Winner cf Morse-Holmes game meets winner.of Smith-Branch game Winner Bennett v. ijowe meets winner Dudfield v.
