In the Italian tennis championships, Canefree, a young Italian, defeated Hopman (Australia) 6—4, 4—6, 6—3, 3—6, 6—3. The Australian Davis Cup players,, who .practised for the first time, play at Monte Carlo from the 26th to the 30th. only in doubles and mixed, doubles and thence proceed direct to Eastbourne for the Cup tie against New Zealand. NOTES AND NEWS. At the Melburn (England) tennis tournament in the quarter finals, Mal.froy defeated Nigel Sharpe, 6 —2 6—4; Miss Round defeated Mrs Whittingsall, 6—l, 6 —4.—P.A.
