INCREASED RELIEF PAYMENTS'. 50 PER CENT. EXTRA FOR WEEIIv; (Press Association).'' ( AUCKLAND, April 16. „ The Hon. .S. G. Smith 1 , Minister fojc Employment, announced to-night that, in connection with the celebrations in New Zealand to mark the silver jubilee of the King, ifc had been decided to increase tho relief payments of unemployed by fifty per cent, for the week ending April 27. In addition, all those relief workers who will qualify for Easter holidays and who would normally .he called Upon to work on Monday Alay C, will bo paid for that day without being required to porfoim any work. Subject to the exceptions mentioned later, tho 50 per cent, increase will apply to all unemployed who are registered and eligible for relief for the week ending April,27. 1 The exception to whom this concession will not apply are registered men who are on 4b contracts, and <IA contracts, employed by local bodies at standard rates for nbt loss than forty hours per week, supci - visors arid bureau workers —-in short, all those whose weekly rate of pnylrient exceeds the sum of £2 10s. Briefly stated, eligibility for this concession would be the same as applied to the Xmas bonus' last year. The Minister further intimated that it would he pointed out to the local bodies which were providing full time employment for men taken from tho register of unemployed and assisted by a subsidy given on condition that employment is for not less than forty hours weekly, that the amount of subsidy will not he reduced on account of the time lost on May 6, if the local body pays the workers concerned for that day.

CELEBRATIONS IN GTSBORNE

THANKSGIVING SERVICE AND FESTIVITIES

A. meeting representative of local bodies, the Alinistcrs’ Associat on. school committees, sport; bodies, etc-, was held in the Borough Council Chambers last evening to make arrangements to celebrate in Gisborne the occasion of the King’s jubilee. The Alayor presided, and between 20 and 30 representatives were present. It was decided that ihe main festivities should ho held on tlie dnrdate, Alay 0. The Alayor .stated that the town would ho decorated with bunting as on the occasion of tlio visit of the Duke of, Gloucester. Air ('. Alatthews, chairman of the Cook County Council, said h’s council would contribute a proportion of tho ocri.

It was decided that a- united thanksgiving service should be held cn the rjver hank at tlie Band Rotunda at 10 a.m. on Alondny, Alay 6. The Alayor will be the first speaker and will be followed by members of the Alinivters’ Association. This service will be attended by members of the military forces. , In the afternoon the Poverty Bay Professional Athletic and Cycling Club will conclude their season with a sports meeting at the Victoria Domain, and there will probably be a Rugby rep. match between Wairoa and Poverty Bay. A basketball tournament will be held, and it is probable that a hockey fixture will be arranged. It was decided , to approach the Savage Club with a view to staging a patriotic concert in the evening, and local dancers, under arrangements made by Air P. Sim, will offer their quota to the programme. Tho proceeds from this concert, it was suggested, should go to the Alayor’.s relief 'fund.

In regard to the school children, it lvas stated that tlie Government had offered a subsidy of fivepence for the entertainment of each scholar. It was also reported that Afr R,. J. Kerrklge had agreed to stage special i programmes at the Regent and Majestic Theatres and at the Opera House.

Ifc was resolved that the children should bo entertained, and out of the Government subsidy it was hoped to purchase some oweets for each child-

A deputation /was received from Bari]efts’, asking that the children there he permitted to participate in the town festivities. It war, decided that all the children’s; functions should bo held on the Friday, not on Alondny, Alay 0, arid arrangements wore left in the haiuln of ihe School Committees’ Association and the headmasters. Tt was resolved to ask Dr. Bowie to make arrangements with the Boy Scouts to light a bonfire on Kaiti Hill, in accordance wjtli a suggestion from the Acting-Priirie Alinister that a. chain cjf bonfires be lit throughout the Dominion. It was decided that .a, further meeting should be held on April. 29, when the progress of the various suggestions could be • reported.
