Wairoa river, slipped from the Naunai wharf. They were caught by a strong ebb tide and thrown' against the piles of the structure, where they clung- for some minutes; Only young children wore in the vicinity, anda, girl of 11 tried unsuccessfully to rescue the victims, who'-iwefe car: ried away and disappeared. On the previous Sunday, two men were drowned in Te Karaka Gorge, near Tangowahino.
