PUPILS’ PLAY-LUNCH

TEACHER INSISTS ON FRUIT OR BROWN BREAD. COMPLAINT TO BOARD. Strong objection to the action of a suburban teacher who insisted' on school children .refraining from eating cake and white bread was made in a letter 'received' at a meeting of the Auckland' Education Board. The Auckland Master Bakers and Pastrycooks’ Association asked that teachers bo requested not to interfere in the matter of children eating bread and cake. It was explained 1 that a pupil at a suburban school dropped a piece of cake in a passage, the, teacher' found it, and as punishment for those who had' cake, compelled! them to write out, twenty times: “I must have fruit only in my play lunch.” The children were also told that they must bring brown bread and must not eat white bread. Tins was the third report of a similar nature received.

The chairman, Mr T. U. Wells, explained! that some time ago the Dental Department had issued a circular suggesting that children should take fruit for their play lunch or wholemeal bread. The teacher concerned, no doubt with the host of intentions, had apparently enlarged on the suggestion. It iwas foolish for any teacher to injzepfere with the lunch provided by a parent for a child. It was decided to write to the teacher and point out that she was not entitled to interfere with pupils’ lunches.
