CLASH BETWEEN MINISTER AND MEMBER. UNBARLI AMENTARY TER M. A brisk argument.between the .Minister of Finance, Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates, and Mr. W. A. Yeitch (I.) in the House of Representatives on Thursday night during a discussion ou the Trustee Com panics Protection Bill led to the use of an unparliamentary term by the member for Wanganui and a demand by the Chairman of Committees (Mr. J. A. Nash) for withdrawal of the remark. Mr. Veiteh said he would make a very full allowance for • the. Minister’s irritability, as he was carrying a heaw load. Mr. Coates said he had listened very carefully to what Mr. Veiteh had had to say, and could make neither head nor tail of it. Mr. Veiteh: Very well, if the bon. gentleman does not believe me be can return where he was, and that is where a larrikin ought to be. Mr. Coates: Does the bon. gentleman suggest 1 am a- larrikin ? Mr. .Veiteh: I am addressing the chair. Rising to a point of order, Mi. Coates suggested that the membei for "Wanganui should be made • to withdraw, as the term was unparliamentary. The chairman agreed and called upon Mr. Veiteh to withdraw, iho latter asked what it was he had to withdraw. The chairman: The word “larrikin” Mr. Veiteh: As applied to whom? The Chairman : You. were referring .to a Minister of the Crown. Mr. Veiteh: T submit I am not under cross-examination. The chairman (firmly): Will you withdraw that word ? Mr. Veiteh: I will withdraw. The question was whether the word is out of order. The chairman : You must withdraw that remark. Mr. Veiteh: Very well, but it was a wrong ruling all the same. Tho chairman: You will withdraw unreservedly without any comment. Mr. Veiteh: Very ’well, I will withdraw unreservedly without any comment.
