The rental values of many hundreds of Taranaki farms may be affected by the decision in a Supreme Court case which began in Wellington yesterday. About £1,000,000 is involved. The hearing is of an originating summons made by the Native Trustee in Taranaki for the elucidation of phrases in the West Coast Settlement Reserves Act, 1892. The main issue is whether in assessing neAV rentals the lessees are entitled to improvements made on the properties since 1892, or only to improvements made during tile last- 21 years. Several hundreds of • leases are to be renewed almost immediately and a considerable number of additional renewals will be made in the next few years. The properties involved are mainly dairy farms. After hearing argument, Mr Justice Blair reserved decision.
