DUELS NECESSARY
FRENCH ORGANISER'S VIEW. Hundred fought annually IN PARIS. MORE DEATHS THAN KNOWN TO PUBLIC.
(Received March 17, 6.30 p.m.) LONDON, March 16. According to the Daily Mail’s Paris correspondent, M. Joseph Remind, novelist and fencing champion, and a well-known duel organiser, says the duel is necessary and is even humane. Its institution enables a little man to protect himself against a big bully threatening personal violence. Duelling might seem an anachronism to the Anglo-Saxon, says Mb Renaiicl, but it is essential in France owing to the inadequacy of the law of libel. A Frenchman is reluctant to appear ridiculous, in bringing personal grievances to the court and finding liis enemy fined a. lew shillings. Only about one challenge in 20, he says, produces a duel, the offender apologising in the majority of cases. About one hundred duels are fought annually in Paris. Few are reported in the newspapers. Blank shots are never fired. A scratch is insufficient to terminate a. duel with swords. Death is less -Unusual than people think, hut > it is ahvays hushed up.
