Heats of the mile men’s swimming championship of New Zealand wei’c decided to-night and were marked by victory, in the first heat, of J. Neville (Taranaki) previously unknown outside is own centre. His time was 23min. 56 l-ssec. and this was equalled by the winner of tho second heat, W. Johnson, Auckland. The results were: First heat—J. Neville (Taranaki) 1; J. Watkins (Hawke’s Bay) 2; N. Crump (Auckland) 3. Watkins took the lead just after the start and, maintaining a smooth stroke, increas-
ed is advantage to 10 yards at the half distance. Watkins and Cramp decreased his lead over the remainder of the distance hut, when they were only a, yard behind him and 60 yards remained, Crump suddenly fell back. In an exciting finish Neville won hv a yard, Watkins defeating Crump by 10 yards. Time 23min. 56 l-ssec. Second heat.—W. Johnson (Auckland) 1; J. O’Driscoll (Otago) 2; C. Buchanan (Auckland) 3. Johnson went to the front at the'half-mile and won by 25 yards, O’Driscoll being 30 yards ahead of Buchanan. Time 23 min, 56 l-ssec.
