EGGS AND POULTRY
MARKETING SCHEME IN BRITAIN.
CONTROL BOARD TO FIX PRICES.
200 PACKING STATIONS
(British Official Wireless.). RUGBY, Feb. 10
In the report of the reorganisation, commission, for eggs and'-poultry, issued by the Ministry of Agriculture, it is proposed that England and Wales should be divided into some 200 areas, each with a packing .station, and that an egg and poultry board should he set up to fix prices from time to time.
The commission.points out that egg production has nearly doubled in. the last 10 years, but- little attempt has be made to modernise marketing methods in order to dispose satisfactorily of the increased output. Under the scheme now proposed, each of the 200 stations would have ah average radius of 10 miles, and would collect, test, grade, pack, and sell to distributing trades. All registered producers in areas other than those specially 'mentioned are exempted.
The commission estimates that there are 80,000,000 head of poultry in England and Wales. It believes that since the essential needs of the two sides of the industry are the same, it should be sufficient to set up for poultry marketing an organisation on similar lines to that proposed for eggs. Immediately, however, the board should prepare the ground for development by experiment in various directions.
