Exhibiting superb horsemanship, the Duke of Gouceotor rode at the Marton races to-day, filling fourth posit,ion in the Ladies’ Bracelet, of one mile 13 1 yards, on the topweight, Blackman, owned by Air C. L. Bull,, which was coupled with Red Flush. In the opinion of expert turf observers, the Duke had. an .almost impossible task to ride- to victory with 12 stone- 21b., ,wlrch gave a concession Of two stone to the next horse. He did remarkably well to lead tli e field most of the way and have his number hoisted. The weather was brilliantly fine.
Tho Prince drew No. 4 at the hardier and all got off to a perfect start. There was a roar f ro m the crowd when, before a turlona- bad been covered, the Duke liaiD Blackman -in front and held the lead right into the straight. On the. rails at the distance, when Blackman- was in a wininng position, a challenge caino from The Ark s Conference and Royal Papa, The Duke’s mount appeared to falter slightly lame, and the chance of capping a brilliant effort disappeared. The fought it out in the order given,. while, the Duke vva-j content with /fourth place with Blackman under the tightest rein. The Dukp , was. accorded a memorable reception on returning to . rwoiph in, and the cheering whs’ rented ced. Tho Duke remained a spectator until the seventh race. Ho presented tho-trophies. . 4 -
