SHOP RAIDED.
RUINS OF FIRE.
TREASURE FINDS REPORTED. SYDNEY. November 2. Early this morning the ruins of Air W. Hunt’s shop at Leichhardt which was gutted yesterday by fire, were raided by an eager liGrde of fossiekens. Having heard of the jewellery, sovereigns and other money which the siiop had contained, a crowd early gathered around the fire-char-red skeleton of the building. 1 inding no, one on.- guard except the diminutive and bent figure of the old shopkeeper, who was feverishly digging :n tlie aslnas for more of his valuables, the goldseekers clambered in and, with hare- hands, began sifting the wreckage or fufnitutc, glasv, toys, lollies and other goods. Air Runt immediately called the police, but, it is stated, before their arrival two of the fossickcrs - made rich finds. One is reported to have found a hair pickle .bottle, which,, eye-wit-nesses (stated, contained between 20 and 30 sovereigns, while another found a ruby. ring. Children returned to their homes laden with toy guns, motor ears, and other metal tors. Since this morning's raid the Leichhardt pobee have beep guarding the ruins.
LOTTERY TICKET. To celebrate his good fortune in retrieving most of his savings, worth thousands of pounds, Mr Hunt toda\ commissioned a- representative of “The Sim” to purchase a lottery ticket for him. The money; for the-ticket was made up of coins saved from the fire. Mr Hunt asked that the ticket be named “Gold Eire.” . He stated that if the ticket- were successful Constable Mitchell, who has acted as escort :i*a removing the money to the bank, ■ and Constables horsby and Snow, who have watctied the premises since the fire, would share with, him, Leichhardt Council’s health inspector (Mr A. H. Pritphard), who had a narrow escape to-day from a falling sheet ■of galvanised iron,; would also share, he Ridded. To date £613 10s in gold—its value in the . open market, being worth aboxvt : twice that amount—and £430 m silver has been lodged at the bank. This afternoon three billycans contawmg sih-er, a- small bag'of silver, anc( a; sugarbag hnlx-fuir of copper coins were taken to the bank. v. 7
