CHRISTCHURCH. Nov. 9. AV alter AhfeldJ, iwlio pleaded guilty was sentenced to six weeks’ imprisonment by the magistrate. Mr 11. A. To ling, this morning on a charge of keeping a common gaming house at 107 Worcester street.
This followed a police raid. Ahlcld had twice previously been convicted. \
The magistrate said : “The accused’s premises have been used as a betting hoUKe. He has been ~- previously fined £SO in 1931 and: £75 in 1932 for similar offences. According .. . to' tho police he hag been a bookmaker for eight years/ with a largo connection. Tho bets he had taken up to 9.30 this morning amounted to £l2. To lino him under such circumstances would be merely imposing an ‘ additional tax 0111 lus income, derived from an illegal business.” Ahfeld had nothing to-say, and sen--tence was imposed. C
