Would an innocent person be frightened if three detectives approached him in connection with a crime? Contrary answers to this question were given in the Magistrate’s Courtin Wellington hv Detective J. G. Long and Mr. C. A. L. Treadwell, who appeared for a Chinese fruiterer charged with receiving stolen goods. Part of Detective, Long’s evidence dealt with the visit paid by himselt and two other detectives to the Chinese at liis shop. “Did you frighten him? . I don’t mean deliberately, but there wore three great, brawny detectives to one little Chinaman.’' said Mr. Treadwell. The detective replied that he had known the accused personally for tour years and a-half, and he did not seem frightened when the detectives visited him. Mr. Treadwell: “Three detectives would frighten most people.' Detective Long: “Not if they had nothing to be frightened of." Mr Treadwell: “That’s the detectives' point of view.
