Thousands of animals will be sacrificed in Ellore, in the Madras Presidency on Sunday to appeasethe Hindu goddess of smallpox. The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals has unsuccessfully appealed to the local magistrate to prevent the slaughter, declaring there would be a procession on Sunday to commemorate the decrease of tho smallpox epidemic, and that six thousand animals would be sacrificed and their bodies heaped on the roads.
