HAWKE OUP. POA’ERTY BAY’S BID. TEAAI FINALLY CHOSEN. ' DEPARTURE TO-NIGHT. The Poverty, Bay. team to. play in the Hawke Cup challenge match at New Plymouth next week was finally selected by Air. AI. Guthrie yesterday and is as follows: G. N. Lockett (capt.) S. Reeves (manager.) W. Carson. AI. Sharp. M. K. .Boon. G. J. Robertson. C. Fraser. E. James. P. Dow. D. -Wells. E. Dow The challenge game .is to bo played against Taranaki at New Plymouth on Alonday,- Tuesday and Wednesday of next week. The Bay players will leave by car at Ja o’clock this evening and are due at New Plymouth to-morrow evening, so that they will have full opportunity to recover from the trip before the game opens. Wells and James, who are at present in Auckland with the Poverty Bay Colts team, will travel down to New Plymouth to-morrow. The team returns to Gisborne on Thursday next. After the splendid performance registered against Mr. A. Doneghue’s AVellington team during the past two days, the challengers must be given excellent .prospects for success in next week’s/match. Obviously Taranaki are a very solid batting side, as shown by their big score against Nelson this week, but it must he remembered that the South Island side was without the two leading bowlers .who were then assisting Wellington to he defeated by' Auckland in the Plunket Shield match. All round the Bay team appears very sound and it is certain that the cup holders will have their hardest tussle of the season, with the'chances definitely in the Bay’s favor. Local cricketers will join in wishing the tourists the very best of luck and every success.
HIGH SCORING, POVERTY BAY 453 FOR SIX. AIATCII v. WELLINGTON._ . ’ Poverty Bay registered an .excellent performance against Doneghue’s touring AVellington team in the match concluded at the Oval yesterday aftei--noon. .After two earlier adjournments it was necessary to- abandon the match, on account of rain, soon after 3 o’clock. At that stage, in reply to Wellington’s 148, Poverty Bay had .compiled the big total of 453 for the loss of six wickets. The match provided an excellent trial for the local .side in view of next week’s Hawke .Cujj, challenge - game against Taranaki at New Plymouth. ... .
On the first/ day Wellington made 148 and . the local side replied with 234 for the loss of three wickets. Carson (72) and Fraser- (20) continued the Bay innings yesterday morning and runs came freely for a time, hut vvhen he had reached. :89 Carson was .howled by J; C. Dow* Carson playedi dashing- cricket/and /hit, all fours inuthe course of his excellent, hand. ; With Fraser he assisted to add 116, while altogether, during'hib stajr fit the wieketss :; he scored his 89‘out of 140. these figures giving' some idea of his fast/scoring rate. At lunch the, scor-ei was 382 for four, Frusei* being 81 and Dow-51.
Two brief interruptions, on account of rain, occurred> early in the -afternoon and then, when requiring only seven i to •..reach ; three figures, Fraser had the bad luck to be run out." Ftaser played very fine cricket and. hit five fours in all. Wdth Dow he added 148. Five runs later Dow was caught by Gray off Fortune, for.-71 (oight-.fours), another very good innings. Lockett and P. Dow took tho total to 453 without further loss before rain compelled abandonment of. the match. P. Dow’s 21 included three fours. All the Bay men reached double -figures and “Mr. (Extras” contributed the healthy total of a level 50, of which 42 1 jwerev.byes.i /Fortune!’finished sjup with three wickets for 102 and was easily the most successful bowlor. J. G:v Dow .was: very steady and his 26 overs gave'away only 61 runs for one
wicket. Griffiths never appeared espeically dangerous, though he was certainly unlucky on several occasions. Afessrs. .A, Guthrie and T. Sharp were the umpires. - .•• Provided the weather is'fine enough the Wellington team will leave to-day for Tokomaru Bay where they will bogin' a game against Waiapu and conclude same to-morrow.
