The loss of 22 head of cattle was narrowly averted the other afternoon at the Waitangi bridge, when the animals became hogged in the mnd bordering the Ngaruro-r 0 river. A gang of men’set to work with a breakdown lorry and ropes and succeeded in pulling them out safe and sound, although many of the beasts were up to their necks in slime. The animals, belonging to Mr. L. EHarris, who has a farm at Chive, had been placed in a paddock adjae ent to the mud flats. Another mob was being driven along the road and these apparently attracted the beasts, which endeavoured to join the mob by means of crossing the mud to the road. Owing to the soft nature of the silt, however, they became quickly bogged.
