LAST SEASON’S SUPPLIES
SHIPMENTS STARTING SHORTLY
According to advice received ' i n Gisborne'yesterday, last season’s beef being ' held in cool storage will be shipped Homo during December and January. A,t Kaiti there are about 18,000 quarters of beef, equalling approximately 27,000 cwt., Remaining from last season, and it is expected that this will all be cleared by January. .
Some time ago the P.B. and E.C. Sheep-owners’ Union wrote to the Meat Producers’ Board asking its intentions in regard to the beef: accumulations and the following has been received: — “The Board is averse to the Principle of quotas, and it wa.s at the request of the British authorities) who were seriously perturbed at the price position, and having regard to August to December being the peak marketing period for Home killed beef, that the Board arranged with the owners of beef quarters held in New Zealand to voluntarily stop shipping these stocks until the end of November.
“When this matter was under discussion in London, stocks of frozen beef from all sources in store in the United Kingdom showed a large increase over t.he quantities held at the same date last year. The London representatives of the larger exporters all agreed in view of the position of the market, there, that it was useless bringing stocks forward to go into store.
“It was agreed at the time that the spread shipment of this carryover beef was to be gone into later, and the Board has since Communicated with the various owners and freezing works, and is doing everything possible to get these stocks aw-ay a.s quickly as possible ’’ A circular from the Board received yesterday intimated that last season’s beef will be shipped during December and January, while, regarding new season’s beef, it was stated as follows: — “The New Zealand Meat Producers 1 Board has advised the authorities in Great Britain that the quantity of frozen beef, including boneless beef, to be shipped from the Dominion to arrive next year up to June SO, 1934. will bo approximately ■SOO.OOOcwt. Experimental shipments of chilled beef are not included in this estimate.
“The foregoing figure includes the carry-over stocks of beef at present held in the Dominion, so that, deducting the quantities of beef at present, held in store, it will leave approximately 300,000 c wt. of new season’s beef, which can arrive i n the United Kingdom , for the six months to June 30, 1934. “It is estimated that ample Provision has been made in the quantity mentioned to cover the normal output of beef in quarters and boneless beef to arrive in this period.’’
