GIRL’S PERILOUS TRIP DUNEDIN, Oct. 31. A remarkable experience befell a .young woman who resides at Mosgiei while she was on her way to work in the city ibis morning. ■ Tho girl, who is about 20 years ot age, leaves Afosgiel daily by the 5 minutes past, seven train, and it, has apparently been hex, practice, in common with others, to take a- short -cut.to- the-passenger platform by. going across tho railway yardsi This morning she found- her way; ' ~.ocked by tho south-bound goods •train, which was drawn up on the line between her and the. train t<~_ Dunedin. The girl had just mounted . the buffers between two sheep waggons to cross over, when the train started, and she was apparently,unable to a-light.' - She was noticed in her parlous position by passengers on the train, for Dunedin, and railway officials wore at once'informed. By this time however, the train had run past they ; signal-box, ,and it could not, therefore be stopped by l an- official there. 'The Ailanton station, .. four miles, from AJosgiel, was communicated wit-h, and the train stopped thereImmediately it came to a'standstill "the girl, who had fortunately decided not to try -to jump oft; ns-Hlie train sped on, scrambled down from her dangerous -position, and made straight- back to -Alosg/’el. The distance, as stated,. between the two stations, is four miles and a hap', but the girl was so. little distressed by her dangerous trip that she cover--0,1 the mileage in sufficiently quick time to enable her to catch the, quar-ter-pa st-eight train from- Alosgiel to Dunedin. The gifl must be consider-, eel-very lucky, but, in the meantime, officials of the Railway Department aro desirous of interviewing her.
