Except for the levelling of the floor and cleaning up, it is ready for the laying lof rails, and will be ready next week. The total length of the two tunnels is 18,170 ft; the amount of roc-k excavated was 460,GU0 cubic yards; the gelignite used 850,0001 b.: timber, over 5,000,000 super feet; and cement, 26,000 tons. Of the rock taken out, 120,000 cubic yards were' crushed and used for concrete aggregate, as well as 85,000 cubic yards of sand. On the completion of the deviation, Mr Langbein, who is in charge, 'y*iril'l be transferred to Masterton to supervise highways as the representative of the Wellington district engineer of the Public Works Department.
