HHOMh _ Arguments innumerable have waged over the best sheep in every show, for naturally a champion./in 'one respect may be far. from Premier honours from other viewpoints. With the object of ascertaining which is the best three evc hoggets on the showgrounds next week, the A. and H- -Association has initiated an important competition. This is the first tiine such a .contest lias been held in Poverty Bay, but there is little doubt, judging from the interest already displayed, that before long.it will he of'e of the most important classes in the show -so far as the farmer is concerned. Briefly, the object of the contest is to have a thorough examination of the ewes from every point of view. The competition is for pens of three o"'e hoggets. They will he shown in the wool.' First, they wii be shorn on the. grounds and the wool judged by a yool valuer for its weight, uniformity, character, style, soundness and condition. Then the sheep are passed over to the fat stock their breeding quality, points being allotted for vitality, constitution, lamb-bearing capacity, lamb-bearing quality and general merit. Then the sheep are passen over to the fat stock judge who, after the weight has been ascertained, adjudicates on quality, constitution and general merit. In each section a maximum of 50 poin ts is set as the ideal standard. Messrs. Dalgety and Co. are supplying the latest type of Wolsdcy engine and new pattern W T olseley twostand shearing plant, which will.be in operation under the supervision o 1 the world’s champion, shearer, Mr. W. Higgins. Tho judges’ cards for the competition are as follow: —
