HOME AGAIN 15 ILLY MoK A Y RETT' RNS EXCELBENT Till? booking wonderfully lib and well after bis trip to Australia with tbo Now Zealand boxing team, Billy McKay, holder of the Dominion amn teur flyweight til 10, arrived back in Gisborne yesterday afternoon. He is thoroughly delighted with his jfiunfc across The Tasman and regrets ( that it is now all over. The tr.ip across, McKay mentioned, wa s so rough, that training on hoard was impossible, thus imposing a severe handicap on the uoxers from the outset. As sparr.ing partners after landing they merely had one another and naturally they icouhl not work as freely as might have been the case otherwise. These initial handicaps were refflocted in the first night’s performance, when, the Australians won the majority of the bouts. “Our men were in need of a light that niglu ' pointed out the Gisborne lad, “but the team made up lor it all the next evening, when they 1 simply eclipsed' the home boxers.” Regarding his own match, the Gisborneite said that ho met a very solid opponent. In the second found each brought over, his right powerfully, and their fists met, .McKay practically losing the use of that arm from then on. Despite this, the match proved very pojmlar and remarkably even. McKay, his seconds, his team mates, and the New Zealand manager, Mr Bush, all thought, victory went the Now Zealander’s way, but the judges disagreed. and the referee decided in favor of the Australian. Had his arm not been injured, MrKay considers, he would have won comfortably and he is quite confident that another match would see ilie decision reversed 1 . The New Zealand team was treated with the greatest hospitality everywhere, stated the Gisborneite, and, in fact, there was really too much hospitality, for the members did not get all the sleep required for strict training. Numerous 'functions were arranged for them and they had to put in an appearance at least. Altogether, he found the Australians a very fine sporting crowd, always sociable and ready almost to ‘•'bet <>n a drop of rain.” Among other places visited was the ivandwick racecourse and ho quite enjoyed the differing conditions there, as compared with the sport in the Dopiinion. ‘‘l had a great time ali through and the rest- of the team were a splendid lot to travel with , lie concluded. McKay has every expectation that his arm will he sound enough for Ivim to participate in next week’s local tourney.
