These marcs include I’haola. bv Catmint (imp.) from Hyades. arid therefore ;i half-sister to the A.J.C. Derby "inner. Ammon Ra, and Lady Greyspear, by Groyspcar (imp.) from StWinnow. Mr. Davis bad previously secured Eaglet, by Chief Ruler (imp.' from Dovdof. and the fn ih-hro/ 1 marc. CvnHiin N. bv J'’c'W/'nnnt from Bn vote _ Eaglet and Cynthia N. which were secured last spring bv Mr. Davis, were sent to the TUdors I ,fl Stud and wore served by Night Raid to American time. ’Phaola and Orcvspoar. which have now been added 3n Mr. Davis’s collection, were also served by Night Raid to American time. These, four highly-bred marcs, all of which are excellent individuals, are now a.t the Elderslie Ptml and nXe all due to load early -in H'3-l to tlie service of Phar Lap’s sire. L is Mr. Davis’s present intention to have the youngsters reared in New Zealand and should they develop satis fa rt.orilv fhov will be taken to America and raced. As these tt.iviorders will be foaled to American time they will become eligible for entry in the American classic races. Mr. Davis lias established in the purchase of these mares an enterprise of great possibilities and the suer-ess of bis efforts in produce in New Zealand horse; capable of winning classic races in America will have- the good wishes of al] racing and breeding interests here.

Phaola, who was bred in the Auckland province by Dr. F. If. B. Milsom. is already a successful producer as she is the dam of the two-year-old. winner. Coronis, by Gay Shield. Phaola herself was a highclass performer winning the Avondale Stakes, Te Awnmntu Cup, Tnkapuna Cup. Allison Handicap Cup. in addition to other winnings and P‘ n< "' jugs ran second in the N.Z. Oaks. All-Aged Stakes, etc. Dr. Milsom has already produced from Hyades. apart from that brilliant racehorse. Ammon Ra. a hjgh-olaijs performer in Prod ice. an own sister to Phaola. Prodiee’s many high-class wins included the Avondale Stakes, Avondale Guineas. Great Northern Guineas. Great Northern Oaks. .Allison Gup on two occasions. Te Awamutn Cup. Takanuna Cun. Avondale. Cup. etc. Tirades, bv ITymottus from Straga. was an own sister to a brilliant racehorse in Tlymestra whose many victories included Hie Great Northern Champagne Stakes and Royal Stakes. Manawntn StakesH.B. Stakes. Ida wr-ra Stakes. Jackson Stakes, etc. Rlinohi herself comes from the No_ 13 family which has been so successful "in N p w Zealand and which is credited with such great horses as Martini Henry. Robinson Crusoe. No’.'denfehlt. etc. It is a coincidence of nolo that her sire. Catmint, is already represented in America by a very high-class mare which has produced there a highclass staying m Mike .Hall and tlie Derby winner. Charley 0.

Lady Greyspeur, a mare bred in Canterbury and who was not herself raced, has hoon unfortunate so fai in her stud cnr<?or. Sha was the dnm of the outstanding three-year-okl. Light Brigade, which son of Xiglit Laid was so highly tried at Auckland prior to shipment to Australia in the spring. His object was the A..T.C. Derby. Unfortunately he died very shortly after reaching Australia." Like riiaola. Lady Gveysppar descends from Carbine through Spearmint as her sire. Greyspcar. indicates. Greysponr with limited opportunities in New Zealand produced stayers of class among which vas that great horse. Rapier, who is now at the stud in Canterbury Li:. M innow. the dam of Lady Greysponr, was the runner-up in the N.Z. Daks and she is by that brilliant horse. Masterpiece, from St, Helen, a hahsister to Rercmoana. Lady Cavendish etc., and to the N.Z. Oaks winnei. Bonny Helen, the grayudam of that good performer. View Halloo. St. Helen is sired bv Signer - , son of Pilgrim’s Progress, while her dam, Helen Portland, accounted for the Great Northern Oaks and she was sired ky Dorchester, a son of famous Bill of Portland. The best horse that- ta is branc-h of the successful No. 5 family has produced in recent times is that high-class performer, Tleremonnn, who twice wop the Thomson and Easter Handicaps and also the Jackson Stakes. TTis many other brilliant pei-formauces included the A.R.C. Railway Handicap, the C.-LC. Great Easter and Challenge Stakes, the Ormond Memorial Gold Cup. etc. Lady Cavendish was the best two-venr-old of her year and also won the A. 8.0. Railway Handicap. Avondale All-Aged Stakes, etc., while Bonny Helen in addition to being an Oaks winner accounted for the Manganui Guineas, O.J.C. Metropolitan Handicap, etc. Lady Gi'eyspeav is a very stoutly bred mare and her progeny by Nignt Raid will be extraordinary in this respect as they "ill have a double cross of Carbine.

Eagjlot was also bred in the Auckland province and she is an ideal type for a brood mare. Jamieson, who trained her for her breeder, Mr. Fred. Earl, always claimed that she should have won the N.Z. Derby. She accounted for the Oaks a couple of days ■ later in much faster time. She also accounted for the Wanganui Guineas and the Great Northern Guineas, and was n v °rv consistent performer. Dovclot, her dam, by Minister, produced other winners in Columbia, and Prince Oto, and was a good performer herself. Mnlster mares have been extraordinarily successfifi at the stud and have produced such notable horses as Desert Gold, Wolaroi, Dark Ronald, Valienre, Jocelyn, etc. The combination of Chief Ruler and Malster is one

that should undoubtedly be credited with unique possibilities as Chief Ruler has imparted to his stock his own .great, temperament and supported aA- he- is with such brilliant and successful blood there is every reason to anticipate that h’l’s daughters will be invaluable in the paddock. Eaglet is from the No. 21 family. This family produced Lonely, the- English Oaks winner and dam of Leighton, and it is noteworthy that Dovelet’s sire, Malster, is also from this fam-

Cyritliia N, a successful race mar° after she was imported to New Zealand, is beautifully bred for the studSlie is by St. Simon’s successful son. •Juggernaut, who was out of S*nndridge’s full sister. Amplie's. Sundridge manes and those of bis sons have been eminently successful as producers so that in this way Cynthia X is highly recommended. Her dam. I-ayoß. is by Bay Ronald, sire of Buyardo who in turn sired Gainsborough, while her grandam. Chi’d s Nun. is by Childwiek from the On l ' Thousand Guineas winner. Nuti Ni-

cer, who nfcciuiitod in a]| for £lO,00() in stakes. Nun Nicer "’as by Common out of Priestess which also produced The Bishop, winner of the Sandringham Foal Stakes. Priestess (by Hermit) was a winner a.t Newmarket and was a half-sister to Mirni who also accounted for the One Thousand Guineas. Newmarket Stakes, the Oaks. etc. Mirni produced high-class winners in St. Marloo. Mint a pen e.
