GISBORNE SCHOOL

ANNUAL BALL. SUCCESSFUL FUNCTION AT CITY HALL. • Despite the inclement weather conditions the City Dali was a .scene of gaiety last evening, when the. Central School held its annual plain and fancy dress hall. The gay cos-' tunies of the dancers, combined with the artistic decorations of streamers and lanterns, presented a blaze of colour. The hall was packed to capacity, all available seating accommodation outside the dancing floor being occupied bv parents and friends of the children.

The behaviour of the children,, both on and off the floor, was a credit to their teachers. While on the floor tho children were under the. control of Air. 0. Rigby and responded promptly to his. whistle. 1 The arrangement of the dances was in the capable bands of the headmaster (Air Shimmcn) and the ' following members of the school committeg: Air. d. H. Sunderland (chairman), the R ev. P. I. Parsons, Dr. Singer, and. Aressrs; 13. Unton, J. L. Smaill, G. Clayton and T. P, Smnle. The following committee was responsible, for the supper arrangements: ATo.sdames Ball. Twingston, Appleby, Eddy, Diamond, Sellman, Robin-son, Garland, Shields, Hulbcrt, Clark, Lange, Holland, Waite Black, Balfour, . Freeman, Parsons, Johnson, John, stone. Langridgo, Sunderland, Sinclair, Aitken, and Aliss AVincheomb. The waitresses, ex-pupils of the school, who had kindly offered their services were: Hisses B. Sceats', N. Lang-, ridge, R. Stephenson, Z. Holland, A. Slight, B. Findlay, J. and AE Redgrave, AI. Hockley, N. Cummings, J'. Simpson, P. Bayliss, L. Davis and J. Riddell. A delightful programme of music was supplied by Airs. Thompson’s orchestra, while clever spot-lighting was well carried out by Air. FI. Nelson. Dining an interval in the dancing Air. Shimmcn took the opportunity of thanking tho organisers of the dance. He ,sakl that the success was mainly duo to the largo band of lady workers that had been working all the morning and afternoon to got the supper ready. He had left New Plymouth with a feeling of regret, but the sociable and helpful manner of those connected with the school had soon made him one of their number.

Continuing, Afr Shiinmen said that tbe splendid dancing of Lbe children had surprised him. The way they, kept time with the music spoke volumes for the thoroughness of their teaching. Air. Shimmeu thanked the committee for their splendid work. Ho made particular reference to Air Sunderland and Air. Lungridge, but said he was certain that the other members had done as much work, but he happened to be more closely associated with those he had mentioned. PRESENTATIONS TO DEPARTING TEACHERS. Air. Sunderland said lie was in complete agreement with Air. Slummen, that the lady .workers were largely responsible for the success of the. dance. On behalf of tbe parents he had been asked to present Air. A. G. Lancaster, wbo has been touching at the school for ten years, and Aliss Redmond, with tokens of gratitude for their services. Both Air Lancaster and Aliss Redmond will bo leaving shortly, having been promoted to higher positions.

. Tlio two recipients were then handed gifts —a gold pencil uud books to Mr. Lancaster and a note*.casket and books Lo Aliss Redmond—by a member of their respective • classes, standard V . boys and standard .11. gilds. Replying on bolndt - of himself and Miss Redmond Air. Lancaster said that he was very sonv he had to leave Gisborne, for lie had had a very happy time here and would always remember it.
