Tl's companion, Jack Anderson, aged 25, of Birkenhead, managed to savuu ashore at Bayswatcr. reaching laud in an exhausted condition about 3.30 The accident was reported to the police shortly after, but in spite o t a search of the foreshore, no trace either of Hawkins or of the overturned boat was found. After tbe overturning of tbe boat, Anderson swam in the vicinity lor some time, hoping that they might be picked up. His companion could not swim. Finally, Anderson struck out for the shore, but exhaustion and cramp, brought about by the intensely cold water, forced him to clamber on board a bulk ojf Bays, water. There he collapsed and did not regain consciousness for nearly three hours. Just before reaching the hulk, he saw the overturned boat with Hawkins still eliugiug to it drifting about 20 yards off Me end ol the Bayswatcr "liaif. When he regained consciousness, Anderson re-entered the water amv swam to Bayswatcr arriving iu an exhausted condition. He staggered into a shop, the shopkeeper immediately informed the police. Constables arrived at Bayswatcr by launch, but it Avas too dark for a search to he carried out. Two constables’ made a search ol Devonport, Stanley Bay and Baysiwater foreshores, hut returned to Devon port about 10 o’clock without having found any trace of Hawkins or the boat.
