SHEET OF WATER

HAWKE’S BAY RIVERS BREAK THROUGH

iow L ANDS NEAR MEEANEE * INNUDATED

THREE FEET DEEP

SO SERIOUS STOCK LOSSES anticipated Press Association^

NAPIEII, May 30,

y rainfall of 7in. over, the last three days ceased this morning, and the weather « now fine, but the- wa-ter-ways are unable to cope with the demands made on them. The Tutaekuri River hurst loth banks below Weeanee. and a sheet of water extends for 'miles, varying in depth l'rom a few inches to 38. at that township. The same river-also came over at Fairy’s Bend, a mile above Alcoa nee, and inundated the Papakuru district, from which it is impossible to obtain definite news. Jt ds .believed that no serious stock losses occurred, and 1 thait the danger is not serious enough to endanger human life. Practically an area, of three miles by two miles is covered by water. The mam road south ‘is not seriously affected, hut the Pakowhai road, where the Ngaruroro also broke free, is covered up to a depth of throe feet.

The rain in the back country was very heavy, and the rivers only became dangerous ait 9 o’clock last night, after conditions had improved greatly on the lowlands. Most of the settlers, however, had heeded a warning and removed their Eat oct, although some dairymen were caught napping.

There is much water on the harbor reserves south and west of Napier, hut it will leave valuable silt deposits. Athough the lonic had been unable to reach the ordinary anchorage since Saturday- morning, two steamers were safely accommodated at the breakwater harbor. The lonic came to anchor this morning at the inner harbor. Aluch siltution is expected, as the Hood water? made their way down the old Tutaekuri River to the entrance .where breaking seas met the discharge. Waves .were breaking well out, and rolling through the pierheads, making use of the harbor impossible to all boats.

One cause of such extensive flooding is the fact that the earthquake narrowed the Tutaekuri channel by at least one-third of its width, thus blocking back the water.

Tlie greaiej- part of the afternoon was free from rain, with the result that- the river levels kav. shown a decrease. which indicatethat the danger of further floods is past. Water covering the Meanee and Papakura districts i s still of considerable depth. but i< slowly finding itg way clear. It will, iiowever, be several days before it becomes comparatively dry and possible to make a complete survey or the damage and losses.
