“THIN END OF WEDGE”
N.Z. DAIRY COMPANY OPPOSED
TO RESTRICTION
AIR. PAR LANE’S COAIAIENT
HAMILTON. Alay 2->. “It, looks veiy much like the thin edge of the wedge,” said? Air. C. J. Parla.no, general manager of the New Zealand Co-operative Dairy Co., in commenting to-day on the London cablegram stating that New Zealand had accepted Britain’s proposal to restrict shipments of whole and skim milk powder during June, July and, August. , Air. Parisn c said he was extremely surprised, particularly because, as the largest manufacturers, of milk powder in the Dominion, his company had been consulted, and it had definitely opposed the suggested restriction on the. ground that it would create a- dangerous precedent. The actual restriction of shipments dining the months mentioned was not a.' serious matter, lint it looked Uke the. thin end of this wedge, consequently he would not ho surprised to see more definite demands made tor restrictions of our butter and cheese exports.
“As New Zealand is a new country in the process °f development, said Mr. Parlane, "it- is absolutely essential that tho industry should definitely oppose any form of icstriotiou on its exports of dairy produce.. If the. request tor milk restrictions has been agreed to one can only conclude that the manufacturing interests are proving 100 strong, and. the. Government is taking tin's way out rather than facing tile question of either substantially reducing or removing the duties an British goods, and thereby living up to the spirit of the Ottawa, agreement.” ,
