PRIZES TO TOTAL £7OOO
TO BE DRAWN IN FOREIGN COUNTRY. SCHEME FAILS. TWO MEN FINED £ls (Press Association) WELLINGTON, May 26 Charged before Mr. E. Page, S.M., to-day with establishing a lottery known as tlm Empire and Foreign Amalgamated Consultation, whereby £7OOO in money was to be distributed by chance. Melton Allan Ingle and William Craighead' pleaded guilty, and were each fined £l3. and given on c month to find the money. Herbert Henry Waters was fined £1 for selling tickets. Detective-Sergeant Kevell said that in December, Ingle and Craighead decided to promote a lottery and approached a local firm to print suitable tickets. Five hundred "'erg printed, and the defendants proceeded to seli them themselves and through agents. They were approached by Detective-Sergeant Hal] in March, and. as a result of the interview. ceased spiling. They said that tliev bad sold loft tickets.
The defendants. Sergeant Revel! said, would have had to sell 56.000 tickets. For a start only 500 were printed, and us the lottery wn s to close on March Si, and be drawn on April 14. the defendants had very little time-to sell the required num/ber of tickets. They proposed to wet a concession to draw the lottorv in some foreign country. such as Tahiti. It- w as obviou s that they could not promote the scheme, but he did not suggest that ft was exactly n fraudulent scheme. Counsel for the defendants in’tert jeeted that there was no suggestion of fraud. He Regarded Sergeant Reyell’s remarks as a breach of faith. The Commissioner ol Police liad been interviewed in connection with the matter, and had given an assurance that there would be no allegation of fraud.
Sergeant Revoll: 1 do not suggest that these men went uut to defraud people, but 1 suggest that they could not possibly sell the required number of tickets.
Mr. Page: You mean the scheme would have fallen through? Sergeant Re veil: Yes.
Sergeant Revell said Ingle was, on two years 7 probation for theft. Craighead was a married man, and had never previously been before the court. -
