PUZZLING. ENGLISH DERBY FIELD. LONDON, May IG. There have been many "mystery horses’’ in previous Derbies, but never such a mystery Derby as the coming one. There was no outstanding entry, and recent races have only increased tlie puzzle. Owing to the lack of stayers, it is anticipated that one of Lord Derby’s Chester winners, Hyperion or Highlander—-both successful over the Derby distance —have the best chances.

Although the opposition was negligible. Sir A. Butt’s Younger Lover was victorious with 10.5 at' Newmarkcg in a field mostly composed of non-stayers, the Aga Khan's Felicitation being favourite and' finishing fourth. The Aga Khan's Gino and Lord Woolavingtou's Manitoba are suspected of being non-stayers. Sir H. Cunhffe-Oweii’s Kingsalm--on lias recently been most consistent with two good seconds. Hyperion is at present joint favorite with Rodosfo, who runs in the French Two Thousand Guineas on Sunday, after (which his owner, Princess do Faueigny-Lucigno, will decide whether he is to run in the Derby. Orwell at this lime last year was a hot favourite at 2 to 1. hut at present there is no favorite for this Derby. It is many years since odds were so liberal in the betting on the classic.

Winter Handicap, of 110 soys. One mile.

NOTES AND NEWS. The following New Zealand horses have been nominated for the Victoria Racing Clues July meeting: Grand National Hurdle Race: Thespis, Royal Visitor. Grand National StedpVddliasef: Royal Visitor, Billy Boy, Paris. It looks as if Flemington’s gain will be Riccarton’s loss ns on the form of last winter Royal Visitor and Billy Boy a.re two of the most interesting ’chasers in the Dominion. They could race r| t Flernington and be back here for the C.J.O. meeting, hut it would be somewhat of a rush. ,

A few seasons ago Puwhero, by All Red, wag the best jumper m commission, so far as the actual clearing of the fences was concerned. All the stock of the defunct Stepniak Dorse have been Cable to jump, and at the present time he has a couple of winning representatives in Red' Bank and High Commissioner.

.Retract is doing a steady preparation at Woodville, and so far is keeping sound. This good winter perform,cr is engaged in the seven-fur-Jong event at Woodville to-dey, and is forward enough to race prominently.

A high opinion is held of the Royal ' Divorce gelding Takalma, who is engaged at Woodville. He has been pund up for in two events —tile Jubilee Cup and the Goldfinch Memorial Handicap, seven furlongs—but at the time of writing nothing definite is known as Jo' which event he will contest.

Lord Val had not had much racing recently, hut under, winter conditions he. is usually well to the fore. Ono ha s only to .recollect his per-formance's-at the last .winter meeting at Trentham where in the Steward, s Handicap, six furlongs, ho was beaten by Cliicf Link by a- nose. Chief Link and Lord Val dead-liented on the second day in a seven furlongs evonb, while on the last day Chief Link won the "Winter Oats, ono mile, and Lord Val vfiii the Onslow Handicap, six furlongs. Lord Val had a

race at Te Rapa when lie showed that he was approaching his best by tlie way he finished on and ho should not he long out of the money.

Paddon proved himself one of the best hurdlers seen out toward the end of last s oason, winning, among other .races, the Winter Hurdles, two miles ami a quarter, at Wellington and running third in the Grand National Hurdles. He has n°t been racod much in the interim, and Ids performance in the Brighton Hurdles at Ellorslie was most inspiring. Today Paddon is a clilleront howc. and his performance in running second to High Commissioner on the first day at Te Rapa shows that lie is not far from his best. Paddon relishes soft going, and in the Great Northern Hurdle Race he is sure to he one of the prime fancies.

Unoco looked particularly well when he paraded for the Kopaki Hurdles at Te Rapa, and he raced accordingly. He was alwfiys sotting tho pace till the last liurcde where ho was Joined by Radiant Sun, the latter beating him home by a neck. Unoco ran badly at Pukckohe, but it is stated that lie got a bump at tiro start which seriously affected him and ho was unable 1,0 show Ins best afterwards. Unoco is engaged at the Great Northern meeting, and 110 looks like being prominent at that fixture in minor hurdle events.

The Great Northern candidate Billy Bov was given a school over five (fights of hurdles on the course proper on Tuesday morning' and got through his task in excellent style. R. W. Lewis is giving Billy Boy a solid preparation, and when he goes to tho post for the GVeat Northern Hurdlo Race his condition should be perfect. His weight (10.11) is only 91b in excess of that which he carried to victory in the Brighton Hurdle Race just over five weeks ago. but the extra poundage is not likely to trouble him, for lie is a proved weight-carrier. lie had the Brighton Hurdles in safe keeping half a mile from home and wo n with a bit in hand at the finish. On that form the extra half mile attached to the Great Northern Hurdles is unlikely to prove beyond him. and he is sure to bo one of the haii'dest to beat on the day.

• * * p». \V. Lewis, trainer of Billy Boy stated that L. Dulieu will ride that horse in the Great Northern Hurdle Race. Ho has previously been successful on Billy Boy winning the Autumn Steeplechase at Ellorslie last rear, and the Waikato Hunt Cup. Dulieu will also ride I’lying Piiuce iu the Qornw.ull (Handicap. A. G. Parsons will ride Master Brierly hi the latter event.

At the adjourned inquiry by the stewards of the Wanganui Jockey Club into the improvement shown by Curio in winning the Belmont Handicap on Saturday, compared wHli his first day’s running, it was decided that no action be taken.

Although Deputy Ruler ha s finished racing for the present season he is being hacked about in preference to being turned out, and thi s may prove a wise policy. This two.yearold put up several first-rate perfoi mances earlier in the season and uas unlucky not to have won more races than he did. He has grown and thickened out noticeably during U.e last month and everything lomts to him developing into a first-iate Ch roe-year-old.

During the p-it few weeks Laudlubber’s tasks have been confined to strong pace work on the sand track, and little fault can he found with his condition at the pi seen! time. In the early part of the season the hack gave proximo of tnrninu out a bi"F above the average, but on ng to developing soreness 011 several occasions hi 3 .-übserwic fo.-in was oelow that expected of him It is pist possible that the suitor going that will be experienced during the next few months may favor Landlubber to some extent, consequently an early improvement in his form can he looked for.
