A BIRTHDAY PARTY

On AVodnesday afternoon a very delightful children’s party was given by Airs. 11. G. AVollborne, at her pretty riverside homo to celebrate the sixth birthday of hor small daughter, Bunty. The weather nvas pleasantly mild and the lovely garden formed' a picturesque setting for the merry company lof little folk, all sorts of jolly games boing entered into with enthusiasm.

The charming scene—there are few sights moro fascinating than a children’s party —was watched from the wide verandah by a number °t parents, who enjoyed the fun qiiito as well as the smaller fry. Indoors the rooms wero gay with autumn Honors artistically arrauged. Tlio drawingroom was decorated i' l crimson and gold, a hug© log lire adding to the atmosphere of eliaiin, while tawny chrysanthemums were chosen for the adornment of the diningroom,

A wonderful party tea was served in the nursery, which had been completely transformed for the occasion and presented u very festive appearance A huge spiderweb, composed of green, orango and primrose-coloured streamers, radiated from a central light, quaintlv shaded, to tlio lour walls’ and from it wero suspended brightly-hued balloons and enchanting favours which were later distributed to the little guests. The table, lectin, with all the good things dear to childhood, was ornamented with alluring blue glass bowls (111 Id -pviltji sweets* and The, handsome birthday cake. adorned with six little gnome candles and a sprig of holly, was cut by the small celebrant.

Th e hostess was extremely smart in a tailored suit of chocolate brown and flame-coloured jovsev cloth, and a felt hat to match

Her little daughters wore very attractive, Pamela in a frock of blue and white patterned Liberty linen with blue trimmings, and Bunty m a simple little frock of ei’cam and yellow muslin.

BASKETBALL DANCE

Nothing could have been more unpropi.ti.ous than tbe weatlrf on Thursday night, when the Cash Stores Basketball Club held its an nual dance in the Freesia Lounge, and consequently the function was hot as well-attended as its predecessors. Simply ado 1 ned, the pretty duiieoroom presented a charming scene, the monogram of the club and the Cash Stores flag, advantageously placed on the walls, forming a special feature of the decorative scheme. Tire music, supplied by Airs. Alenzies’ orchestra, was all that couiu bo desired, and much-enjoyed extras wero contributed by Alisses Ai. Aston and G. Wilson. Tlio duties of AI.C. wove most oifieiently undertaken by Air. P. AlcMalion.

The catering was in th© capable hands of Air. Bert Lo.we, and Ihc charmingly-arranged supper tables were adorned with pastel-lmed chrysanthemums.

No detail had been overlooked m the preparations for the occasion, and much of the success ol the ©veil ing was undoubtedly due to the efforts of the joint-secretaries. Alisses r. Somervell and D. Card tables were arranged on tho stage for the entertainment of the übn-daricers, and easy chairs and nigs made everything delightfully comfortable.

Community singing, witli Miss Halbert at : the piano, was entered into with zest, and chiii'mingly**: rendered vocal solos were contributed by Miss D. Sharp and Mr. J. Parker, the accompaniments being played by Miss Halbert with, sympathy and’ understanding. ’The supper-room was ' gaily hiiug with streamers, and very beautiful pink sweetpeas and chrysanthemums were used with artistic effect inthe decoration'of the tables.'
