COUNCIL’S MONTHLY MEETING. b ■' • - Cook County affairs wore dealt with at the monthly meeting of tho council yesterday when, the chairman, Mr Chas. Matthews, presided . over the following: Ci'S. \V. Hie Cook Hospital board) advised that the levy for 1933-34 amounted to £4770, of which £2OO is for capital and C 457 01 for maintenance requirements. The letter was received, the clerk mentioning that tlio levy lost year was £4724.

Mr Duncan Mcßae wrote asking that repairs.. be carried out on the road leading up to section 2, brock 7 Okitu. The engineer (Mr A. Guthrie) stated that the work asked for would cost about £lO. The district engineer of the Pailways Department advised that the trees obscuring Iho view of the line near Wadiiroro station, where the fatal accident occurred last year, were still a source of danger and that the occupier of the land had refused! to cut' them down unless compelled «to do so. The council’s assistance was asked. —The chairman and the members for tlio Gisborne riding were appointed a. committee to bring down a report oil the position.

HIGHWAYS TRAFFIC CONTROL 'Phn main highways traffic inspector, Mr W. 11. -Scott, reported! that, during the past two months, bis inspections were as follows:—“No. J. Section.—l have made four trips over this district. Two ear drivers were detected driving in a manner dangerous to the public, and one oar driver was found to he unlicensed. ‘‘No. 2 Section.—Two visits wore made to Mot u and five additional trips as far as To Karaka. 'Two unlicensed 1 vehicles carrying passengers were located and also two unlicensed drivers. I am keeping a rinse watch on this section. “No 3 Section.— J have made two trips to Hicks Bay. The observance of regulations on tin’s section of highway has shown a- considerable improvement;; thanks to the co-opera-tion of the police officers in tho various districts.

“Prosecutions.— during the past year. I hare conducted 46 eases of

various breaches of the motor regulations and by-laws and have been successful in 42 of same.” The report was . adopted.

ENGINEER’S REPORT. Mr A. Guthrie, the engineer, reported on. maintenance and construction of highways and county roads, during the month ended May 20, -as follows: —

, “Maintenance was of a light nature owing to the fine weather experienced during tho month. Shingle repairs have been carried out to roads in War mnta, Pakarae, Pouawa- and Pati.il.ahi Ridings. The tractor graders have bci ng engaged surfacing roads ‘in vari ©us [Tidings. The bridge hands have been engaged on repairs to bridges and ■culverts and general maintenance. Tbs metalling of-52 chains of Money's road 1 , Waimata, has been completed. Reconstruction, of a section of War mata Valley road between McDonald's Bridge and the store is in hand. —Highways—

“Gisborne Wairoa via Morerc.—< The sides of the road mere trimmed with power grader. Unsealed sections at Manutuke wore given a light coat of surfacing with river shingle. Side drains were cleaned and minor repairs carried out ori Matawlicro. “Gisborne Wairoa via Hangaroa.— The usual maintenance was carried out on this road. Six surfacemen and (eight relief workers have been engaged clearing slips and on general maintenance. Surfacing with river shingle has been completed between ' 11.7 m and 12.7 m.

“Gisborne Opofciki via, Main (3.50 m to 14.12 m) Maintenance consisted of surfacing of unsealed ' section with power grader and clearing of side drains.

“Gisborne OpotiM via Coast (1.20 m to 4m). — Maintenance was confined to cleaning of side drains and outlets.

“Ormond via Waiohika.— Maintenance consisted of surfacing unsealed sections with power grader and minor repairs repairs to bridges and! culverts.

“Patutahi-Rere: The usual rnainienance was carried out and repairs to macadam surface completed between end of bitumen and Ngatapa Hill.”

The report was adopted without discussion.
