NOTES AND NEWS

The Gisborne candidate, Kinsel, has arrived at Ellcrslie and, all going well in the meantime, is a certain starter in the Great . Northern Hurdles. ITe ]ms performed well over the hurdles lately, winning the Riverslea Hurdles with 10.11 and finishing third, with 11.9, to Red Bank and Kimho in the Tvaramu Hurdles, at the Hawke’s Bay meeting. He has 9.5 in the Great Northern.

One of the stories retailed at AYanganui on Saturday regarding Maori racehorse owners concerned the late Sir .Tames Carroll. Sir .Tames sent a colt down to be trained, and the trainer sent him a wire ns follows: “Colt arrived. Very small.’’ Later in the day he got a typical reply from Sir James which, read as follows: “Miilium in par cod' It is related that the trainer went- round for some clays endeavouring to got his Maori acquaintances to translate the three .“Maori'’ words for him.

Miss Hastings will be worth watching in some of. the big hurdle events inter on. She -did not appear to be handled too w-elle in the May Huddles at Wanganui on Saturday, hu f . phe put in a..splendid run °n tho outside of three horses .at the turn, thus covering a lot of extra ground. With a clear run at. the last obstacle she might have been second.

When leading- in the May Hurdles on Saturday Ganpat bit the second obstacle and stifled himself. As the race progressed he felt the effect and was sore on pulling up v . However, the injury docs not appear to bo serious, and .it is expected the Lord Quex gelding will be op the tracks again in the course of a day inr two. All'going well Ganpat will fulfil his engagements at EHerslie.

Consent was scratched for the Great Northern Hurdles at Auckland 0 12,52 p.m, yesterday.
