OHAAJPION TROTTER

SYDNEY OWNER'S CHALLENGE

NEW ZEALAND lilt : S CHANCES. Mr. 12. Martin’s challenge to race

any trotter or pacer in the world with Walla \\ aha lor LSOO a side has caused a stir in N.Z. trotting circles, bub it is unlikely that his challenge will be accepted by a New Zealand owner; much i-jss by an American enthusiast.

It is assumed that the contest.would take place in Sydney. The outstanding pe-rformanco °i Walla Walla at Sydney, when lie paced a mile on a hall-mile track in 0.2 2-5, has linpresced light harness enthusiasts so much that it is unlikely that any horse in America or Now Zealand could journey to Sydney and defeat the Australian champion. No doubt the most likely to make a contest with A alia Wailaarc Harold Logan and Hoi I’Or. At the moment Harold Logan and Roi TOr are both out of commission. Even at their very best few New Zealanders .would be prepared to take either Harold Logan or lb ol ]'or to Sydney to race Walla Walla. If the Australian' champion visits Now Zealand then there is a possibility of Ins meeting both Roi l’Or and Harold Logan. NOTES AND NEWS. There is no doubt Consent shopld have won tho Century Hurdles at Wanganui. Ho led practically all the way, was jumping cleanly and showing no desire to run off. Ilis rider was evidently caught unawares, ..as ho was watching Henry of Navarre on;the outer when High Fa-lutiu’,'hard ridden, got up on tho inner, and beat the' Acre gelding bxi the post. Consent iwas responsible for the fast time recorded, 3.11 4-5, and he could have improved upon this. When Alullive dvou -the ( May Hurdles ni 1022 lie cut the distance out 1 in 3-.il, which then established a now' record for the mile and threequarters for Australia and New Zealand. Consent appeared, to be fairly fresh at the finish, and -must bo hard to beat wb.ni Ellerslie engagements -come round. -

: It was reported from Wellington a few .days ago that tliorc appeared a possibility of Friday Night, tlie yearling brother: to Phis’: Lap, being sent:To the United States to : be trained for some big races there. Mr ■A.VjJi -Richardson, ,-iwhoarrived..at, Wellington from -Sydney on: the Maunganui,. said hq ’-started negotiations ifrprn hisi;.home‘ tin ~ California late' last yetfr,'..-and ’while in Wellington would communicate witjh the owner, • Mr. 'Armstrong,. of 'Chrhst1

View Halloo .won the Empire Handicap liko a racehorse. It was a really good performance, as ho had LhlO in the saddle, and, won going away, nothing else having a clianco with him once he took the lead a t tbs distance. He was turned out in great fettle by F. Tilley.

Knoll mere has often shown a lot of pace on the tracks, but he has so often disappointed that he was allowed to pay a great price when lie ran third in the Winter Oats at Wanganui. He 'finished on solidly and should win a race cr two in the near future.
